This Amityville bay front property was damage after hurricane Sandy. This required new home construction with new elevations. We also designed new custom masonry entry’s and driveways. We added a lush sod lawn and added new sustainable plantings throughout the property.
Redevelopment of Massapequa Landscapes
Anchor landscape was established in 1978 in the town of Massapequa NY on the South Shore of Long Island. Remaining a resident of Massapequa thru the years I have always enjoyed developing new landscapes in my home town of Massapequa. Being one of the hardest hit communites from super storm Sandy Massapequa residents have been redeveloping more sustainable landscapes. With the changes in elevations of renovated homes the new landscapes have proved to be challenging to homeowners. We are specialists in creative front entries, gardens and landscape design that these new elevations require. Pictured (in before and after photos) is a fall project on the Nassau Shore in Massapequa, this is one such project that required new elevations. The homeowners are both teachers, one a earth science teacher who loves rock and boulders. The use of natural rock and boulders is one option to establish new elevations. As the Massapequa shoreline slowly redevelops, Anchor Landscape can help you develop new elevations and natural sustainable landscapes that are more super storm tolerant.
Thank you again Mr. & Mrs. D for being so kind to my crew. Gary
Re Landscaping The South Shore of Long Island
Super Storm Sandy took its toll on the residential South Shore of Long Island in 2012. Damage to hardscapes and plantings on South Shore towns was enormous.
Based on the south shore of Long Island for over 35 years, Anchor Landscape Inc. has been developing properties to be more sustainable to the harsh conditions the shoreline can produce. Wind, Sun and Salt are three of the most destructive elements pounding the South Shore. Utilizing high quality and more tolerant products for the hardscapes and plantings is the key.
With the devastation of the storm came a need rebuild at new elevations for shoreline homes, Amityville, Massapequa, Babylon, Lindenhurst & West Islip are included in the hardest hit areas. Home elevations are now as high as 7′ above grade with some 16 steps to even reach the front door. While this is a necessary change, landscape must now be developed to soften the look of these structures.
Anchor Landscape Inc. of Massapequa has been creating unique masonry & carpentry designs to create beautiful entry’s, incorporating plantings to accommodate the new Landscape challenges homeowners are facing with these new elevations. The use of high stress tolerant plants such as , juniper, spruce and pine will also help develop a more sustainable South Shore.

Cure Winter Burn Damage on Evergreens
As you begin to inspect your landscaping after this long winter on Long Island, you may be noticing that your evergreens are looking gold, orange and brown. These are common symptoms of winter burn on evergreen trees and shrubs.
Here are some tips to cure winter burn damage on evergreens:
- Give your shrubs a selective pruning before applying fertilizer.
- Apply complete shrub fertilizer in spring and water it well, this will encourage new growth.
- Wait for the new growth to remerge and then prune out any dead stems that are left.
- Be sure to water your recovering evergreen regularly.
Depending on the type of tree or shrub, recovery time may vary. To prevent winter burn make sure all evergreens are well watered going into the the fall season. This will go a long way to help prevent another return of winter burn in spring.
